Your Name: Tanya Bell
Company Name: Moms & Bums
When was your business born?: Moms & Bums was born on Dec 14th, 2007 on a long cold snowy day in
Brampton, Ontario.
Why was your business born?: Our children are being raised in a world that is quite different from the one that we grew up in. As parents we want a healthy environment for our children: a safe home with nontoxic products and an unpolluted environment. When I was pregnant with my second child I began to educate myself and took a good look at some of the products I was using. I discovered the truth about the chemicals and toxins in products I was using. I decided it was time to take the green road to a more natural lifestyle. The quest to find products that were gentle on my baby and the Earth then began. Finding products that support the environment and provide our children with a healthier lifestyle shouldn’t be hard right? As I searched I found it difficult to find the brands I wanted to use in stores local to me, especially when it came to cloth diapers. I couldn’t believe that in a populated area like Brampton, Ontario there were no stores that carried cloth diapers, so the dream for Moms & Bums began.
What does your business offer?: Our slogan is “For all your pregnancy, breastfeeding and cloth diaper needs!” We are
Brampton 's only one stop natural parenting and cloth diaper shop! Moms & Bums is a parent owned company located in
Brampton, Ontario, Canada (just a few short minutes west of The Greater Toronto Area). We are pleased to provide an easy to use online shop for our customers worldwide and a showroom for our locals who prefer to buy in person. Our goal is to be your first choice for cloth diapers, cloth diaper accessories, babywearing and other natural parenting products. You will not find anything in our shop that we do not use on our own children. We aim to provide consumers with a wide range of cloth diapers, breastfeeding products, pregnancy, postpartum and feminine hygiene products, baby slings and wraps and clothing made from natural fibers. We also provide a wide array of natural and biodegradable products for the whole family.
How do you manage being a parent and having your own business?: It is not easy. Luckily I have chosen a business where my consumers are widely parents or about to be parents, so for the most part they are very understanding that my family comes first. At the same time my 4 year old loves to help me unpack stock boxes, and loves to play with children while their parents shop. I have caught her setting up her toys and playing “store” a few times, so hopefully one day she will endeavor to take over Moms & Bums and help the next generation of parents take the green road too!
What’s your best piece of advice for new parents? : Don’t listen to all the advice you are going to receive from everyone. Especially the great advice from those who have no children! This is your baby, you are the parents, you know your baby better than anyone else even before it is born. Relax and trust yourselves and you will be great parents!
What’s your best piece of advice for parents thinking about starting their own business?: Always put your kids and your family first. Do your research and go into it you’re your eyes open. Don’t expect to make a profit for the first year- no new business does. Start slow and let your business grow with you.
Finish this sentence…if I could do anything in the world it would be…. : …to change the views of as many people as possible when it comes to modern cloth diapers. Have you heard the saying “These are not your mama’s cloth diapers”? Well, it’s true! Modern cloth diapers don’t require pins, or rubber pants! There is no soaking, bleaching or dunking! In fact taking care of your modern cloth diapers is as easy as putting on a regular load of laundry.
Where would you like your business to be in the future?: I would like Moms & Bums to grow as my family does. As my children grow I find new great products for them to use. I hope to one day be able to offer great eco-friendly products for all ages. We are currently testing out some great household products, so you can expect to see an expansion of our household products lines in the near future.
